Nathan and his team were awesome to work with, from start to finish. Nathan was extremely collaborative during the design process, and up front about timing and cost of the project. My husband and I annoyingly decided to change course on a big part of the project a few days into starting the work, and Nathan was very calm, professional and accommodating through it all. He took on the challenge of sourcing, transporting and planting 3 large olive trees for us, and pulled it off wonderfully. They look amazing! His crew was also super friendly and hard-working, and always tidied up the work site before leaving for the day. All around, we’d highly recommend them for your landscape needs!

From the design phase right through the build out, Terrain Landscape was a pleasure to work with. We are thrilled with our new yard and would recommend their services to anyone looking for a superb experience.
In the design stages, Nathan the owner was easy to work with and a good listener who showed up on-time for meetings. He took our thoughts and ideas into consideration and made them a better-than-imagined reality, showing us full color drafts of our yard plans along the way, both from an above and a 3-D rendering perspective. We went through a number of changes along the way both for budget and aesthetic reasons. Throughout the process, Nathan was good about explaining the pros and cons of building materials, plants, and other considerations we hadn’t thought of to fully utilize the space we had for our family.
The design itself was worth hiring this company, but I was so happy to know they would not only just design the yard but build it. In the building phase, Nathan and his crew were prompt, professional, fast working and great about keeping us informed with any modifications they foresaw or scheduling issues.
They completed the project on time, within the projected timeframe, and on-budget. I liked that they used an online invoice system that stayed “live.” In some areas, our projected costs from the original budget actually went DOWN (one plant was cheaper than Nathan originally projected, another instance was on the electrician’s line item). Each time we were able to see that credited back to our invoice.
And, when the project was complete, Nathan was great about scheduling a walk through the property and going over thing. He also made sure his crew came back to promptly addressing those small, remaining “punch card” style items that linger with any project. We are so happy to have hired them for the build. They took our style and vision for our townhome entry/yard and made it a stunning reality.

I cannot say enough about how wonderful it is to work with Nathan. He is always quick to respond and eager to please. He listens well, spends as much time as you need in the design process and all through the project, and is passionate about his work and delivering what you would like in a landscape. We hired him to remove our front lawn and plant a drought-tolerant, mostly native garden. From even before he was hired to the end of the job, he provided excellent customer service. He is patient, knowledgeable, fair, and willing to work within your budget and help you personalize your landscape if you wish. The project turned out beautifully, and everything was done in a very timely manner, In fact, my husband and I both felt that Nathan (and his crew) always tried to go above and beyond at every step. We did a total overhaul of front and back – areas were somewhat constrained by existing pavers, walls, etc. Nathan and Lance did a fantastic job, including a new fence to add dimension and some privacy in the front. We are new to area, but neighbors walking by stop to compliment the incredible “upgrade”. They were very professional, followed through with timeline commitments, and periodically check back with us. I highly recommend. Will try to remember to snap some pics and update this review.

We love Terrain! We have used them for our front yard and our backyard for both design and landscaping. Our front yard work included removing our lawn and adding drought tolerant plants and path lighting. Our backyard is a mixture of grass, fruit trees, vegetable boxes, drought tolerant plants, path, yard lighting and even a pergola and fountain (see attached photos). They removed our old landscape and designed and built the new one for us. We love our yards and receive so many compliments! Nathan and Lance make a great team and are super knowledgeable, and their employees are friendly and hard working. They even have a great, cost effective maintenance plan for when the work is complete to keep the yard(s) in tip top shape. We recommend Terrain to everyone we know!

Our experience with Nathan and his crew at Terrain was wonderful. We interviewed three other firms, and Nathan stood out as being the most professional, easiest to collaborate with, most knowledgeable and one with the best ideas. A longtime friend of mine recommended Terrain after they re-did her front lawn, so I already knew what a great experience she had had with them. And we had the same from the initial consultation, to the design phase (where Nathan came up with creative solutions to problems based on our lifestyle), to the detailed list of the work they were going to do and corresponding price (all of which fit in line with the budget we gave him at the beginning), to showing up every day (and letting us know ahead of time the days they needed to work off-site), to keeping us continually updated on their progress, to completing the job in the timeframe he had proposed, to coming by after completion to check on how things were growing, to replacing the few plants that struggled to grow. Nathan was on-site most everyday and the crew he has working with him are exceptionally nice and hardworking. And whenever we had a question or concern about anything during the process, Nathan responded either in person or via email right away. Can’t say enough good things about this company! Having been through a couple of ‘landscape’ projects in the past, that went relatively well, I was extremely pleased with Terrain! In an effort to take advantage of the current rebates for going drought tolerant, there seemed to be a lot of work for contractors. I had 4-5 contractors come to the house, appear interested in the job, but then I never heard back from them. I initially met with Nathan, who listened to my ideas and what I wanted, and then got back to me with a quote when he said he would. I later met Nathan. The entire project went smoothly and exactly on the timeline they initially communicated to me. There were no ‘surprises’ and they kept to their word, doing exactly what they said they would do and delivered a beautiful new drought tolerant yard to me!! They also provided the documents I need for my rebate. The post-inspection was today and, based on what the inspector told me, it seems that I will get a full rebate.
Both Nathan and Lance are very professional and pleasure to work with. They are knowledgeable and creative and diligent in ensuring that the client is more than satisfied with the end product. Whenever I had questions, whether I called or emailed, they were always prompt to get back with me. Additionally, they follow-up to ensure that the plants are doing ok and I was told that if any plants die within the first few months, they will replace them. So far, Lance has already come by at least once to check on my yard and did some watering and all the plants are looking healthy at this time. I actually have a couple more ideas for the yard now that I want to discuss with them. They work together great as a team and are very involved, doing much of the work themselves versus using sub-contractors, which helps ensure everything is done up to their expectations! Even though the yard looks great now, even though the plants are new and small, I can’t wait to see it in 6 months, as I’m sure it will be even more beautiful! My neighbors all seem to like it too. Needless to say, I highly recommend their services!! Call them and have fun creating your new outdoor oasis!!

Thumbs up for Terrain Landscape on two different home landscaping projects. The first was a big, steep slope in our backyard where some native plants we had previously installed had died. We wanted to keep the hillside as natural looking as possible, complementing some majestic old Torrey Pines at the top. Nathan did a great job of choosing and placing hardy, interesting plants – some native, some not – that are thriving a year later. Our second project was to replace a scraggly front lawn that is hemmed in and overshadowed by huge junipers. Nathan’s collaborative style was a big help in both design and execution. The new front garden looks terrific!

I would highly recommend Terrain Landscape. Nathan Smith designed an attractive, low maintenance, low water usage landscape for our front and side yard. We have had ongoing comments about how good the yard looks and our water bill dropped noticeably. We also bought the one year maintenance contract, which gave us the advantage of having Nathan watch over the plants while they matured. I highly recommend this service too.

We were partway into our pool construction project when we realized we neededhelp designing and building the rest of our outdoor living space. I hired Nathan (Terrain Landscape) to design hardscape and landscape for a front yard remodel. The project was detailed and involved him coordinating with the house architect and construction crew. I couldn’t have been happier. The project was a complete re-design of my front “yard” and included and original design, plant choices, watering system and installation of boulders and a stone walkway. From start to finish, Terrain was responsible, respectful, communicated well, and did what they said they would. They were also fun to work with – a nice combination of professional and personable throughout the project. Nathan was an excellent listener. He totally “got” what I was wanting and translated it into a design concept that I liked right away. He was clearly very knowledgeable about all aspects of the project. I liked his plant selections but changed a few because of my color preferences, and he was great about offering alternatives. Nathan at Terrain understood my vision of creating a lush vegetation version of Bali in our backyard, and translated into reality. By design, the landscaping in the front yard is simpler and more conventional, and one would never guess what was in the back yard! Most people who come into the house and see the back yard, just go “Wow!” Terrain also provides ongoing maintenance of our little kingdom every three to six months, which includes updating plants, careful trimming, etc (beyond the routine things are gardener does). All changes are discussed with us, and then implemented. We love our lush backyard! Highly recommended!
