Leucadia Coastal Retreat
Groundswell was commissioned to develop a complete front and backyard landscape in Leucadia. The client was dissatisfied with the dated and disjointed elements in the lower garden which lead to it being under utilized.
The design process started with conceptualizing a circuit to navigate the garden so that the entirety of the property could be used and appreciated. A variety of elements were integrated along the way, but the most significant was an expansion of the lower patio which to which we applied a subtle tile. The extended tile patio serves as the centerpiece, featuring a built-in Borneo mahogany bench and a striking granite-topped fire feature. This combination provides a warm and inviting space for evening gatherings, offering both comfort and visual appeal.
Adjacent to the tile patio, a secondary patio area boasts pavers that mimic the look of flagstone, creating a rustic yet sophisticated atmosphere. These pavers are not only durable but also low-maintenance, ensuring long-lasting beauty. The clear redwood fence, gate, and arbors at the side entries seamlessly integrate with the overall design, adding subtle strength and a touch of natural elegance to the landscape. The redwood’s natural resistance to decay and its attractive finish enhance the garden’s appeal, creating a welcoming and secure boundary.
Water features strategically placed within the garden introduce a sense of tranquility and relaxation. The soothing sounds of flowing water add to the serene ambiance, creating perfect spots for contemplation and unwinding. A sitting area, shaded by a stylish sail, offers a comfortable retreat from the sun, making it an ideal location for relaxation throughout the day.
A labyrinth made completely of blue fescue adds a unique element to the landscape, providing a space for meditation and reflection. This feature, combined with the planting of fruit trees and ornamental grasses, adds texture, color, and seasonal interest to the garden. The inclusion of chartreuse breath of heaven (Coleonema pulchrum) with its airy foliage and delicate flowers, brings a touch of brightness and contrast, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
The completed landscape project in Leucadia is a testament to thoughtful design and careful selection of elements. The result is a cohesive and inviting outdoor space that beautifully marries form and function, providing a tranquil retreat that can be enjoyed year-round
