Carlsbad Mediterranean

Groundswell developed a complete front and backyard landscape and hardscape for a client in Carlsbad, transforming a mundane space into an oasis of Mediterranean allure. The design created a new and compelling space in the front yard. The new entry guides visitors into the sanctuary of the home. Crafted with precision and finesse, the entry is more than just a pathway; it’s the threshold to a captivating journey.

A steep slope was moderated by the addition of several boulders and a retaining wall which created a space for a charming courtyard on the way to the front door. As guests traverse the entry walkway, they’re greeted by a symphony of scents and sights. At the threshold to the courtyard Groundswell added a custom cedar gate flanked by stone veneered columns topped with containers of succulents. The entry landscape features drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants that flourish, their vibrant hues drawing birds and butterflies. The landscape speaks of resilience and elegance, with an olive tree standing tall and succulents carpeting the ground in a tapestry of greens and purples.

The backyard features low stone topped walls and a built-in BBQ, topped by a redwood arbor. The BBQ counter is honed concrete and the sides feature a stone veneer which is repeated throughout the landscape. A pergola over the back patio door creates a nice transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces as well as providing a shaded area for sitting and enjoying the water feature.

Custom redwood screens with planted trellised flowering vines were planted along the perimeter to screen views and provide critical privacy. The combination of the screens, arbor and patio cover create a feeling of enclosure which is comforting but also somehow make the space seem bigger.

Landscape lighting transforms the landscape in the evening into a magical wonderland. Spotlights cover the cooking surfaces and accentuate the structure of the trees. Pathlights help light the way to the front door and make navigating the entry steps at night much safer. Lights installed in the walls highlight the stone veneer and masonry craftsmanship.
